Coals of the Phoenix
Digging through the ashes,
while the flames still burn;
all the while, hoping inside,
to find a lesson to learn.
Crying out in painful agony,
as the coals singe soft flesh;
inhaling the smoke of the past,
waiting for the browser to refresh.
While denying the fire is dancing,
watching the skin slip away;
wondering if this is a kind of hell,
deciding what there is to say.
Remembering skipping stones on water,
watching the ripples grow and fade;
thinking of the series of mistakes,
as the ghostly images are replayed.
The regret of love unaccomplished,
conditioned by manipulations that lie;
fearing the inevitable, eventual change,
while typing a cautious, conscience reply.
Twisting love into hate and anger,
to destroy all, surrounded by walls of flame;
from the ashes of old, the Phoenix rises,
into unknown new, nothing stays the same.
